When Is Donor Egg Treatment Right for You?

Egg donation isn’t a last resort; it’s a deliberate, well-supported route to parenthood, and one that’s becoming increasingly common for people in very different circumstances. Whether you are a solo parent, part of the LGBTQ+ community, or navigating a complex fertility journey, our Inclusive Families pathway provides a clear, supported route to parenthood through egg donation.

You Might Be Considering Donor Eggs If:

Diminished ovarian reserve or POI
Previous IVF cycles haven’t led to a pregnancy
A genetic condition you don’t wish to pass on
Cancer treatment or surgery has affected fertility
Male same-sex couple or single dad by choice
Approaching or past the point of your own egg viability

For many patients, this can be one of the most emotional and complex decisions in fertility treatment. For others, donor eggs may offer a higher chance of success depending on age, ovarian reserve, or previous IVF outcomes. There’s no universal “right” answer, only the pathway that feels right for you, your body, and your journey.

Our team will talk you through whether donor eggs are the right next step: honestly, and without pressure.

How Egg Donation Works at Avenues

  1. 1

    Consultation and assessment

We talk through your history and why you are considering donor eggs. A Fertility MOT (Reproductive Intelligence Review) checks your womb and, where relevant, your partner’s sperm, so the plan fits you.

  2. 2

    Implications counselling

Before treatment you will have implications counselling with a specialist counsellor. It is a required step, charged separately from your package. It is a space to think through what donor conception means for you and your future family, including how and when to talk to your child about their origins.

  3. 3

    Your donor preferences

Your Avenues donor coordinator asks which characteristics matter most to you, such as ethnic background, eye and hair colour, height or education.

  4. 4

    Searching our partner banks

Your coordinator searches the databases of our partner egg banks and shares matching donor profiles with you. If London Egg Bank is your preference, their own team runs the matching with you and you buy the eggs from them directly. We keep going until you find a donor you are happy with.

  5. 5

    Confirming your donor

Once you choose, we confirm the donor meets UK legal requirements, complete your consent forms (including legal parenthood forms where needed) and order the eggs. They are shipped frozen to Avenues.

  6. 6

    Fertilisation and transfer

In our lab the eggs are thawed and fertilised by ICSI. Our AI-assisted embryology helps select the embryo with the best chance of implanting, and we transfer it when your womb lining is ready.

UK Donor Law, Explained

What the HFEA rules mean for you, your donor and your child.

Donor treatment in the UK is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). These rules apply to every donor we use, including donors from overseas egg banks.

Your donor is anonymous when you choose her

When you choose your donor and at the time of treatment, she is anonymous to you. You will see non-identifying details, such as her physical characteristics, ethnic background, education and interests, but not her name or how to contact her.

Your child can learn who the donor is at 18

Every donor must agree to be identifiable. From age 18, a donor-conceived person can ask the HFEA for the donor’s name, date of birth, town of birth and last known address, which means they may be able to contact her if they choose. UK law gives them the right to this information; whether contact happens is up to them and the donor. Only the donor-conceived person can request it, not the parents. From 16, they can ask for non-identifying information about the donor.

What you can find out as parents

Once your child is born, you can ask the HFEA for non-identifying information about your donor, and the number, sex and year of birth of any other children born from her donation.

Overseas donors meet the same rules

Eggs from a bank outside the UK can only be imported if the donor is identifiable, has agreed in writing to her eggs being used in the UK and has been screened to UK standards. Her compensation must not exceed the UK limit of £985 per cycle.

The ten-family limit

A donor can help create up to ten families through UK clinics. A donor from an overseas bank may also have helped families abroad, and the HFEA holds no information about children born outside the UK, so your child could have more donor siblings.

You are the legal parent

The woman who carries the pregnancy is the child’s legal mother, and the donor has no legal rights or responsibilities. If you have a partner and are not married or in a civil partnership, you both need to sign the legal parenthood consent forms before embryo transfer. We will guide you through these.

Talking to your child

The HFEA advises telling children about their donor origins early in childhood. DNA testing and social media also mean donors and donor-conceived people can sometimes find each other outside the HFEA system. Our counsellors can help you plan these conversations.

Our Partner Egg Banks and Known Donors

Frozen donor eggs from five banks, or treatment with a donor you know, with one Avenues coordinator guiding you.

We are not tied to a single bank, so we can look more widely for a donor who fits what matters to you. Whichever bank your donor comes from, UK law applies in full: every donor must have agreed to be identifiable to a donor-conceived child at 18, must have consented to her eggs being used in the UK, and must be screened to UK standards. We check this for every donor before any eggs are ordered.

Ovacy · Nicosia, Cyprus

A frozen egg bank with donors from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, offering batches of 6, 8 or 12 eggs. Ovacy uses AI-supported donor matching. We only offer our patients UK-compliant donors, and our donor egg package includes 6 Ovacy eggs.

London Egg Bank · London

HFEA-licensed, with UK-recruited, UK-compliant donors. Avenues is a London Egg Bank partner clinic: you buy the eggs directly from London Egg Bank, which runs its own matching with you. You can create an account for free to browse their donors. Your treatment with us is then our Egg Thaw, Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer package.

Ovogene · Lviv, Ukraine

UK-compliant donors, AI-supported donor matching and optional extended genetic carrier screening. Eggs are collected at ARK Cryo in Lviv, Ukraine, and kept in long-term storage at SPLN in Slovakia before they are shipped to Avenues.

Ovobank · Marbella, Spain

A frozen egg bank in Spain, part of the Ovoclinic group, supplying batches of around 6 to 8 eggs. We only offer our patients UK-compliant donors.

Aphrodite Egg Bank · Nicosia, Cyprus

Supplies UK-compliant donors for UK clinics. Batches of 6, 8 or 12 eggs.

Your own known donor

If a friend or relative would like to donate her eggs to you, we provide treatment with a known donor. She has the same medical, genetic and infectious-disease screening as any donor, and you will both have implications counselling. Known donor screening is priced separately.

Batch sizes, prices and guarantees are set by each bank and can change. As well as the batch sizes shown, some banks offer smaller batches, depending on how the eggs were frozen (often two eggs per straw). Your coordinator will confirm the current terms for any donor before you decide.

Why Choose Avenues for Egg Donation?

Avenues is the only UK clinic to embed AI throughout the embryology lab to remove the guesswork, providing you with more precision and better outcomes.

AI donor matching

Some of our partner egg banks, including Ovacy and Ovogene, use AI to support donor matching, helping your coordinator find donors who fit what matters most to you.

Embryo Intelligence™

Once an egg is fertilised, our AI draws on data from millions of embryos to predict which ones have the highest chance of successful implantation.

State-of-the-Art Safety

All donor eggs and resulting embryos are stored in the TMRW Robot, the UK’s first fully robotic cryostorage system, ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.

A Dedicated Team

A dedicated team across reproductive medicine, immunology and embryology provides you with clear, upfront guidance on what treatment involves, timelines, and what happens at each stage.

Double witnessing, digitised

Every time your eggs, sperm or embryos are handled, each step is double-checked and recorded digitally, so samples are always matched to the right patient. It adds a layer of security for you throughout treatment.

HFEA-reported UK average live birth per embryo transferred: 16% for patients 38 and over (we report 40+). For national data, see the HFEA’s Choose a Fertility Clinic tool.

You're Not Doing This Alone

Choosing donor eggs often follows a long road: other treatments that didn’t work, or a diagnosis that changed what you thought was possible. It can bring up grief alongside hope, sometimes both in the same week.

We build space for that. Your package includes 6 months of Paths to Parenthub, an education and community platform for people building their families through donor conception. It gives you courses, webinars and people who have been where you are.

Donor eggs aren’t a compromise; for many people, they’re the clearest path to the family they’re building. If you’re weighing this decision, we’d like to hear where you are with it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IVF with donor eggs cost in the UK?

At Avenues, IVF with 6 frozen donor eggs from Ovacy costs £14,390. The package includes the eggs and their transport to the UK, donor matching with a dedicated coordinator, medication up to a positive pregnancy test, fertilisation, one embryo transfer, and freezing of any remaining embryos with the first year of storage.

If you choose a donor from another of our partner banks, we recommend our Egg Thaw, Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer package (£6,179), with the eggs paid for separately. Your coordinator will confirm the full cost before you choose a donor.

Implications counselling is a required part of donor egg treatment and is charged separately. You can see what is included and not included under each package above. Prices are valid for 3 months from your quote, and your coordinator will confirm every cost with you before you choose a donor.

How do I choose a donor?

After your consultation, your donor coordinator asks which characteristics matter most to you. They search our partner banks’ databases and share matching donor profiles with you. Profiles include non-identifying details such as physical characteristics, ethnic background, education, interests and, often, a personal message from the donor.

If none feels right, we keep searching until you find a donor you are happy to confirm. If you would like a donor from London Egg Bank, their own matching team works with you directly, and you buy the eggs from them.

Which egg banks do you work with?

We work with Ovacy (Cyprus), London Egg Bank (UK), Ovogene (Ukraine), Ovobank (Spain) and Aphrodite Egg Bank (Cyprus). Whichever bank you choose, every donor must be UK-compliant: she has agreed that your child can learn her identity at 18, and she has been screened to UK standards.

Is there a waiting list for donor eggs?

We are not tied to a single egg bank. Your coordinator searches five partner banks for donors who match what matters to you, so your search can begin as soon as you are ready. How long matching takes depends on your preferences: donors from some backgrounds are rarer, so matching can take longer. Once you have confirmed your donor, transfer usually follows within 3 months, depending on the egg bank.

How long does it take from matching to transfer?

Usually within 3 months. Once you have confirmed your donor, the frozen eggs are shipped to Avenues while your womb lining is prepared. The exact timing depends on the egg bank: some eggs need a quarantine period before they can be used, and shipping times vary. Your coordinator will give you a timeline for your chosen donor. Donors from some backgrounds are rarer, so matching can take longer.

Can I have IVF with donor eggs over 40?

Yes. We do not set an upper age limit for donor egg treatment. Whether it is right for you depends on your overall medical history, which your doctor reviews with you before treatment begins, including any extra pregnancy risks to consider.

UK egg donors are aged 18 to 35, so with donor eggs the donor’s age matters more to your chance of success than your own.

Is there a BMI limit for donor egg IVF?

No, we do not set a BMI limit for donor egg treatment. Your doctor looks at your overall health and will talk openly with you about how weight can affect treatment and pregnancy, and the support available. Read about our inclusive approach to fertility care at a higher BMI.

Are frozen donor eggs as successful as fresh?

The donor eggs from our partner banks are frozen by vitrification, a fast-freezing method. Studies show success rates with vitrified donor eggs are now close to those with fresh donor eggs. Frozen eggs also mean there is no need to synchronise your cycle with a donor’s, the donor has already been screened, and treatment can be planned around you. See our egg donation results.

Will my baby look like me?

Your baby inherits their genes from the egg donor and the sperm provider. Many parents choose a donor with similar features and background, and children pick up their parents’ expressions, mannerisms and ways of speaking as they grow.

Early research also suggests that the pregnancy itself may influence how some of a baby’s genes are expressed, known as epigenetics. Scientists are still learning how much difference this makes, so we would not promise a resemblance. What is certain is that you are your child’s parent, and our counsellors can help you think through any feelings about this.

Can I find a donor who shares my ethnic background?

In most cases, yes. Searching several banks gives us a wider choice of donors. Donors from some backgrounds are rarer, so matching can take longer. We will be open with you about timescales and keep searching across all our partner banks.

Will my child be able to find out who the donor is?

Yes. Your donor is anonymous to you when you choose her and at the time of treatment. From age 18, your child can ask the HFEA for the donor’s name, date of birth, town of birth and last known address, which means they may be able to contact her if they choose. UK law gives your child the right to this information; whether contact happens is up to them and the donor.

This applies to UK and overseas donors alike, as overseas donors must agree to be identifiable before their eggs can be imported. Only your child can request this information, not you as parents.

Can I use a donor I know?

Yes. If a friend or relative would like to donate her eggs to you, we can provide treatment with a known donor. She goes through the same medical, genetic and infectious-disease screening as any donor, and you will both have implications counselling to talk through what a known donation means for everyone involved, now and in the future. Screening for a known donor is priced separately; your coordinator will explain the costs and timeline.

How does it work with London Egg Bank?

Avenues is one of London Egg Bank’s partner clinics. If you choose a London Egg Bank donor, you buy the eggs directly from London Egg Bank rather than through us, so they are not part of our donor egg packages. You can create a London Egg Bank account for free and browse their donors before you decide. Your treatment at Avenues is then our Egg Thaw, Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer package (£6,179), which does not include eggs. Your coordinator will confirm the full cost before you choose.

Are there payment plans for donor egg treatment?

Yes. You pay at least 50% up front, which covers the cost of your donor eggs, and the rest in up to 3 further instalments. Your coordinator will set out the payment schedule before you commit.

Do I need counselling?

Yes. Implications counselling with a specialist counsellor is a required part of donor egg treatment at Avenues. It is not an assessment: it is a space to think through what donor conception means for you and your future family, and how to talk to your child about their origins. Counselling is charged separately from your treatment package.

Will I need IVF to use donor eggs?

Yes. The donor eggs are thawed and fertilised in our lab by ICSI (injecting a single sperm into each egg), and an embryo is then transferred to your womb.

What medication will I need to prepare my womb?

Most patients have a medicated cycle: oestrogen to build the womb lining, checked by ultrasound scan, then progesterone to prepare for and support the embryo after transfer. Your doctor will tailor the plan to you, and the standard medication is included in your package, up to a positive pregnancy test.

Can I use donor eggs with donor sperm?

Yes, this is a common path for single parents by choice and same-sex male couples, often alongside surrogacy.

Do you use Egg Intelligence™ on donor eggs?

No. Egg Intelligence™ assesses eggs at the moment they are collected and placed in our incubators. Donor eggs, and any eggs imported from another bank or clinic, arrive frozen, and assessing them would mean thawing and refreezing them, so we do not use it for donor eggs.

Once your donor eggs are thawed and fertilised, Embryo Intelligence™ assesses the embryos as they develop in our time-lapse incubators.

Where will I have treatment?

Egg thawing, fertilisation and embryo transfer take place at our clinic near Euston Station in London, with direct rail links to major UK cities and good connections to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports. There are plenty of places to stay nearby, and our Navigator Team can help you plan your visits.

Medication Included Within Your Package

Our treatment packages include the medications required for a standard treatment protocol. For donor egg treatment, this covers your medication up to a positive pregnancy test.

Every patient’s treatment is personalised, with the exception of Fair IVF. If your Consultant determines that your treatment requires additional medications, higher medication dosages, or a longer course of medication than is included within your package, these medications are not included in your package price and will be charged separately.

Examples of medications or treatments that may incur additional charges include, but are not limited to:

  • Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
  • Pergoveris® above 150 IU per day
  • Stimulation medication above 300 IU per day
  • Stimulation medication required beyond 10 days
  • Lubion® more than once daily
  • Clexane® / Inhixa®
  • Prednisolone
  • Melatonin
  • Immunology medications
  • Any medication outside the standard treatment protocol prescribed by your Consultant

If additional medication is clinically required, your Consultant will explain the medical reason for the recommendation. Before any additional medication is dispensed or treatment proceeds, your Patient Navigator will explain the associated costs and obtain your agreement.

Where possible, you will always be informed of any additional medication charges before these costs are incurred.
