There is no single price for IVF in the UK. Private clinics set their own fees, and a quote can cover very different things from one clinic to the next. This guide explains what drives the cost, what a quote should include, who can get IVF on the NHS, and the questions to ask before you choose a clinic.
Why IVF prices vary so much
The headline price is only part of the story. Some clinics quote for the procedure alone and charge separately for medication, which can be expensive, for ICSI, for freezing spare embryos, or for admin. The HFEA, the UK fertility regulator, advises comparing like with like, and notes that the price will change if your treatment plan changes.
The main things that affect what you pay are:
- whether medication is included, and how much your protocol needs
- whether ICSI is included or charged as an extra
- fresh transfer, or freezing all embryos for a later frozen transfer
- embryo freezing and storage fees
- optional extras, such as genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A)
- whether you plan one cycle or a multi-cycle programme
What a quote should include
Before you compare prices, check that each quote says whether it includes: consultations and tests, medication, monitoring scans, egg collection and sedation, ICSI, embryo culture, embryo transfer, freezing and the first period of storage, and follow-up after treatment. Ask for anything not included to be priced in writing.
Can I get IVF on the NHS?
NICE recommends that people under 40 who meet the criteria are offered an initial 3 full cycles of NHS-funded IVF, with up to 3 more considered. People aged 40 or 41 who have not had IVF before should be offered 1 full cycle. In practice, funding is decided locally, and depending on where you live in England you may be offered 1, 2 or 3 cycles, or none. Your GP can tell you what applies in your area. Previous self-funded cycles count towards the NHS total.
